Record video or snap a photo on Mac. Open iMovie on your Mac along with your project for editing. It's best if you import all of your video into Events in iMovie, rather than importing it to iPhoto. Just use iPhoto for your photos and iMovie for videos (horses for courses, so to speak). Although, as I've explained above, at least iMovie does create an Event for you for those videos in iPhoto. It's much more efficient to have all your video in one place, where you can create separate Events in iMovie for each of your videos.

I think you will find iMovie easy to use once you become familiar with it. There are plenty of Help articles and tutorials available for it (for starters, look in the iMovie menu item Help > iMovie Help).
How to insert audio into imovie. My understanding is that iMovie '11 is more powerful and feature rich than Windows Movie Maker, but I have no personal experience with the latter (nor do I wish to). 😉
